De Soto Rural firefighters rescue a dog tangled in brush in a creek after heavy rains.

De Soto Rural firefighters rescued a dog that was in big trouble on May 3.

At about 2 p.m., the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District got a call that the dog was tangled in brush in the middle of high water in a creek near the 5200 block of Knorpp Road after heavy rains, Fire Chief Paul Mayer said.

“A woman heard the dog ‘yelling for help’ however dogs do that,” Mayer said. “He was tangled up in brush in the water. We heard when he was found only his nose was above the water.”

Firefighters were able to get the dog out of the water by lifting him onto a tarp and bringing him up the bank, Mayer said.

He said the dog was pretty “subdued.”

“He was flat wore out,” Mayer said.

He said he did not know if the dog belonged to someone nearby or if it was a stray.

“It wasn’t very well taken care of,” Mayer said.

Members of a rescue group came out to try to free the dog and worked with Jefferson County Animal Control to take the dog to a veterinarian, Mayer said.

He said he does not know what happened to the dog after that.
