A student at De Soto Junior High School has been turned over to juvenile authorities after he allegedly brought a handgun to school twice over a four-day period.
In an Oct. 5 letter to parents, Superintendent Josh Isaacson said an investigation conducted by the De Soto Police Department, the school district and the school’s resource officer found that the seventh-grade boy allegedly brought a 9mm pistol to school on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1.
Isaacson said no students were hurt.
“The student had the gun in a bag in his locker on both days,” Isaacson said.
In the letter, Isaacson said the student was removed from school on Oct. 5.
De Soto Police Capt. Jeff Wynn said the student was taken to the Jefferson County Juvenile Division detention facility.
Wynn said his department is working with juvenile authorities to investigate the case.
Isaacson said this morning (Oct. 8) that the student had not returned to school and could be disciplined by the district for possessing a firearm on campus.
“He will be facing district policy and procedures outlining bringing weapons onto school property,” he said. “Violations of the policy carry a minimum 365-day suspension and possible expulsion.”
He said the district’s investigation into the incident continues.
“We take any threats to the safety of our students and staff very seriously and will investigate carefully each time,” Isaacson said in his letter.
