Home on Hillcrest Drive outside De Soto damaged by fire.

A home in the 5700 block of Hillcrest Drive outside of De Soto was damaged by fire.

A house in the 5700 block of Hillcrest Drive just outside of De Soto was damaged by a fire March 6, leaving the woman who lives there without a home until repairs can be made, said Assistant Chief Tom Fitzgerald of the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District.

He said the woman and her dog were not at home when the fire started.

De Soto Rural Fire got a call at 8:04 a.m. about a fire in the home’s basement, Fitzgerald said.

“It’s got heavy smoke damage throughout the house,” he said. “The fire was contained to a portion of the basement.”

He said the fire damage was relatively minor, but still, the house is “uninhabitable.”

“I think (the woman who lives there) found she could stay with family,” Fitzgerald said.

“A cause of the fire has not yet been determined,” he said Tuesday (March 12).

Fitzgerald said firefighters were on the scene for about two and a half hours.

The De Soto Fire Department and the Hillsboro and Potosi fire protection districts and the Valle Ambulance District helped with the call, he said.
