Festus man allegedly beats man with whiskey bottle

Danzel Dupris

Danzel R. Dupris, 41, of Festus allegedly hit another man repeatedly with a whiskey bottle during a fight at a Festus mobile home park. The man was on probation at the time of the alleged attack, according to court documents.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Dupris with second-degree assault, a class D felony punishable by up to seven years in prison; and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony that carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison, court records show.

Dupris was booked on July 30 at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, where, as of Wednesday, Aug. 6, he was being held without bond.

Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel said officers were called at about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 2 to the area near Barberry Drive and Scenic Lane because of the altercation. He said officers did not know why Dupris allegedly attacked the 35-year-old Festus man.

According to the case’s probable-cause statement, Dupris allegedly hit the other man in the face multiple times with a Jack Daniels Apple Whiskey bottle. The alleged victim had a swollen nose and redness under both of his eyes when police arrived, but he refused medical attention.

In September 2023, Dupris pleaded guilty to third-degree assault for an incident in February 2022, but the judge suspended imposition of the sentence. Dupris was placed on five years’ probation, court records show.

On April 28, Dupris had his probation revoked, and he was ordered to serve a two-year prison sentence. He had been serving that sentence at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre. His next court appearance is Aug. 27.
