Hillsboro-area man charged with domestic assault

Cortez Thomas

Cortez Lamont Thomas, 35, who lives in the Hillsboro area, has been charged for allegedly attacking a woman on two separate occasions at a home in the 4500 block of Chapel Hill Court north of Hillsboro, court records show.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on May 15 charged Thomas with second-degree domestic assault, a class D felony, for an alleged attack on April 11 and third-degree domestic assault, a class E felony, for another alleged attack on April 26. He also has been charged with two counts of violation of a protection order, class A misdemeanors, for trying to contact the woman on April 27 and 28, according to court documents.

Thomas was arrested on May 25. As of May 28, he was being held on $5,000 surety-bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, according to court records.

According to the case’s probable-cause statement, Thomas allegedly hit the woman in the face with his right knee on April 11 during an argument. He also allegedly grabbed the woman by the hair and shook her head while threatening to hurt her on April 26.

The Jefferson County court on April 26 issued a protection order against Thomas barring him from contacting the woman, who he lived with and was in a romantic relationship with, court documents said.

However, the next day, Thomas allegedly went to a home where the woman was staying at about 2 a.m. When a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy located Thomas that day, Thomas allegedly admitted going to the home, the probable-cause statement said.

On April 28, the woman received messages through Facebook from an account with the name “James Watson” between about 12:35 p.m. and 2 p.m. When a deputy reviewed the messages, it was determined the profile picture on the account was Thomas, according to the probable-cause statement.

A class D felony is punishable by up to seven years in prison, and a class E felony carries a penalty of up to four years in prison. A class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
