A car left running while a mom took her child into a Festus day care was stolen. The theft happened about 6:20 a.m. April 19, Police Chief Tim Lewis said.

The woman’s silver 2006 Mercury Milan was stolen while she went into the Immanuel Lutheran Preschool & Childcare, 19 N. Third St., Lewis said.

“The victim, a 26-year-old Festus woman, was dropping her daughter off at day care,” he said. “She ran in with the child and left the car running.”

He said police tracked the victim’s cell phone, which was left in the car, but did not locate the stolen vehicle.

“We pinged her phone and found her phone at North Second and Glass streets,” Lewis said. “(The thief) had tossed the phone.”

Lewis said the victim also reported she left about $200 in cash in the vehicle.

Anyone with information is urged to call Festus Police at 636-937-3646.
