A caged raccoon was among items stolen during a burglary at an apartment in the 700 block of Delmar Avenue in Festus. The break-in was reported at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (March 30), Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis reported.
“Officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress,” Lewis said. “When officers arrived, nobody was there, but the door had been tampered with. The apartment occupants – a 31-year-old male and a 25-year-old female – arrived and said the items taken were a cage with a raccoon, a cell phone and a purse.”
Lewis said the report does not state why the victims had a raccoon in their apartment.
He said there was no estimated value for the caged raccoon, but the stolen phone was valued at $900 and the purse was worth an estimated $700.
Lewis said there are suspects in the case and it is believed the suspects know the victims.
“We don’t think this was random,” he said.
