James Alvin Brumgard Jr., 47, of High Ridge has been sentenced to seven years in prison for felony driving while intoxicated, his sixth offense, court papers show.

In August 2013, Brumgard, who was driving while intoxicated, was involved in a vehicle accident at Brook Hollow and East Brook roads in Dittmer, the probable-cause statement said.

A deputy at the scene said Brumgard smelled like alcohol and had bloodshot, glassy eyes, and his speech was “extremely slurred.” Brumgard admitted he had been drinking, and he failed field sobriety tests. In addition, he had a .279 blood-alcohol content, which is more than three times the legal limit in Missouri, which is .08 percent, the report said.

Brumgard also was driving with a revoked license, a felony, according to the report.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and on Feb. 6, Jefferson County Div. 1 Circuit Judge Robert G. Wilkins sentenced him to seven years for the DWI and four years for driving with a revoked license. However, the terms are to be served concurrently, or at the same time.

Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Thomas E. Hollingsworth handled the case.

The seven- and four-year terms also are to be served concurrent with a five-year prison term Brumgard currently is serving for unlawful possession of a firearm stemming from a Jan. 22, 2014, incident in Franklin County, court records indicate.

He previously was convicted of driving while intoxicated for incidents that occurred in September 2004 in St. Louis County, April 2001 in Camden County, April 1998 in Jefferson County, May 1997 in Jefferson County and February 1995 in Jefferson County, the report said.

Brumgard currently is in the Moberly Correctional Center.
