Amy L. Borghesi, 39, of High Ridge allegedly admitted to stealing $12,672.40 from school fundraising efforts while working for the Northwest R-1 School District, court documents show.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, April 15, charged Borghesi with stealing, a class D felony that carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to court records.
“We are aware that a former employee has been charged in connection with the theft of funds from school fundraisers,” Northwest officials said in a written statement. “Once concerns were brought to our attention, we conducted an internal audit and fully cooperated with law enforcement throughout their investigation.”
Northwest officials said Borghesi was an administrative assistant at Murphy Elementary School. She began working for the district in August 2020 and was fired in February.
According to the probable-cause statement in the case, the district’s school resource officer confronted Borghesi on Feb. 14 about missing money from a fundraiser. Borghesi returned the missing money along with additional funds district officials believed she stole between Dec. 1, 2023, and Feb. 13.
After Borghesi was fired, the Northwest district conducted an audit of several fundraising efforts she was responsible for at the school. She allegedly confessed to a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office detective that she had taken the money from fundraisers home and used it to purchase groceries and household items, according to the report.
Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Steven Jerrell is prosecuting the case.
As of today, April 17, court records do not list an attorney for Borghesi. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 23.
