Tugboat crew members rescued a 35-year-old Arnold woman from the Mississippi River in Ste. Genevieve County on Wednesday (May 24), about six hours after she jumped in, authorities report.
The woman told authorities she had jumped in the river about 11:30 the night before in an attempt to end her life but changed her mind and clung to a piece of driftwood until the tugboat crew spotted her, said Maj. Jason Schott of the Ste. Genevieve Sheriff’s Department.
He said crew from the tugboat, which is part of a local mining operation, pulled the woman out of the river and transported her to the shore.
The Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, and the woman was transported to Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital, Schott said.
He said the woman seemed to be suffering from hypothermia.
Schott said the woman jumped in the river at the Ferry Landing, where the Ste. Genevieve Modoc Ferry crosses the Mississippi, and she was found about 3/4 of a mile downstream from there.
