An Arnold woman lost $5,500 when someone stole a $50 check the woman had written to a business and placed in a mailbox. The alleged thief then altered the check for the larger amount and stole the money from the victim’s account, police reported.
A 51-year-old Arnold woman told police her bank alerted her that the check was cashed on Sept. 13. The funds were withdrawn at about 9 a.m. Sept. 14 from a Regions Bank in Jennings, the report said.
The report did not say where the woman, who lives on Richardson Place Drive, mailed the check from or what business was the intended recipient.
As of Sept. 21, no suspects had been identified, Detective Lt. Jeremy Christopher said. Anyone with information about the theft should call Arnold Police at 636-296-3204.
