scam alert

An assistant manager at the Marcus Arnold Cinema reportedly sent $845 to someone claiming to be from the company’s accounting department before realizing the request was a scam, Arnold Police reported.

The assistant manager, a 47-year-old Hillsboro woman, said she received a call at the theater, 1912 Richardson Road, around 8:30 p.m. May 15 from the scammer. He allegedly told the woman to remove $2,845 from the theater’s register and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM, the report said.

The woman took the money to a machine at the Phillips 66 gas station, 5 Municipal Drive, and deposited $845 of it into machine and forwarded the QR code to the caller before realizing the request was a scam, according to the report.

As of May 25, Arnold Police were trying to trace the number used to call the theater to identify a suspect, Cpl. Brett Ackermann said. If investigators cannot locate a suspect, the case will be forwarded to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, he said.
