A 37-year-old Hillsboro man was arrested this morning (March 26) for allegedly stealing a donation can from a store counter March 10, Hillsboro Police Chief Charles Bennett reported.
He said officers arrested the suspect at 8 a.m. at his home on Lowry Lane.
Bennett said police got a tip about the suspect’s identity after a story about the theft appeared March 25 on the Leader’s website, along with the suspect’s photo captured by security cameras at the Casey’s store, 10544 Business 21.
“We got an anonymous tip that said where the suspect was,” Casey said. “We got him there. He was taken into custody without incident and admitted he did it.”
The man was being held this afternoon at the Jefferson County Jail, Bennett said.
He said the man is wanted on outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions, so Hillsboro Police will release him, pending the application for warrants, to the other authorities.
Security camera footage allegedly shows the man taking the donation can from the counter and putting it in his pants while the cashier served another customer.
The donation can was for the Relay for Life fundraising effort that benefits the American Cancer Society.
“There was about $30 in the can,” Bennett said.
