Animals unharmed in De Soto-area barn fire

A fire damaged a barn west of De Soto.

A barn in the 12000 block of Peter Moore Lane west of De Soto was damaged last week by fire, but none of the animals inside were injured, according to the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 21 to a fire in a 104-by-84-foot agricultural barn near Hwy. Y. When the first firefighters arrived 10 minutes later, heavy smoke was coming from the barn, according to a written statement issued by the district.

“Crews pulled multiple hand lines for interior fire attack operations,” the statement said. “Once the main body of fire was knocked down, personnel began salvage and overhaul of the barn. Crews worked tirelessly to extinguish hot spots and trapped heat, which included pulling several sections of metal tin. The alarm was brought under control at 9:41 a.m.”

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

“There were no injuries reported, and all animals inside the barn at the start of the fire were able to get out unharmed,” the statement added.

The Hematite, Dunklin and St. Clair and fire protection districts and the Festus Fire Department helped with the call. The Valle Ambulance District also responded to the scene.
