If you have old electronics lying around the house, Northwest R-1 School District is offering you an opportunity to clear them out.

The district will hold an Electronic Recycling Day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, in the parking lot at Valley Middle School, 4300 Gravois Road, in House Springs.

Cindy Horn, the Northwest’s director of technology, said the district is partnering with Midwest Recycling Center in Imperial for the event.

“When companies host these events, they typically are charged a fee to host the event, and (Midwest Recycling Center) has waived that for us since we are an educational institution,” Horn said. “This is absolutely no cost to the district. So that’s an advantage too – that we’re able to provide the service at no fee for our community.”

Most electronics, like laptops and old cell phones, may be recycled for free. However, there will be a fee for some items.

It will cost $5 to recycle a CRT monitor, $30 for a CRT TV that is 26 inches or smaller, or $50 for a CRT TV that’s 27 inches or larger or for a wood console or projection TV. It will cost $20 to recycle an LED, LCD or plasma TV and $10 to recycle any freon-containing unit.

Horn said those who want to recycle an item that requires a charge need to bring cash to the event.

Horn encourages people to recycle unwanted electronics at the event.

“It’s going through the proper disposal channels, rather than just being put into a community dump or trash bins,” Horn said. “It is better for our environment. It’s a great opportunity for our community to do some house cleaning and get things out that they no longer need.”

Horn said she believes the district has hosted a recycling event for seven or eight years, although one was not held last year.

She said she is excited to host the event again this year.

“I have a couple laptops that I am looking forward to bringing down,” she said.
