Police seize shopping bags stuffed with over $5 million in cash

Police have seized a huge $5,340,000 in cash that was stuffed into shopping bags and a kilo of cocaine after stopping a vehicle in south London.

On Wednesday evening, July 29, officers on duty stopped a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle and the driver, a 54-year-old man stopped in Catford, were searched and a shopping bag containing approximately $46,725 in cash was found.

In footage released today, an officer can be seen rummaging through a Sports Direct bag before saying: "Large quantity of cash. An extremely large quantity of cash."

The man was then arrested on suspicion of possessing criminal property. He remains in police custody.

Police were then able to search an address linked to him, which led to the shocking discovery of $5 million in cash, that had been stuffed into multiple shopping bags.

Footage shows a police officer counting out the wads of cash, and whispering an expletive in shock.

They also found one kilogram of Class A drugs, namely cocaine.

The police noted that there are clear links between the supply of illegal drugs and the serious violence that causes such fear and devastation in communities.

Commander Paul Brogden, Specialist Crime, said: "This is one of the largest cash seizures we've seen and shows the impact that proactive local policing can have in tackling serious and organized crime."
