The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold virtual meetings to display two conceptual designs for potential improvements to I-55 in southern Jefferson County.
The virtual meetings are scheduled for 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. Participants can register at bit.ly/I-55-register, and will have the chance to comment on the proposed designs.
MoDOT officials have been studying ways to upgrade I-55 from the Hwy. Z interchange (at Pevely) to the Hwy. 67 interchange (south of Festus).
In the fall, MoDOT conducted a virtual meeting seeking comments on potential solutions for the often congested portion of I-55.
Previously, a $112 million project to add a third lane on I-55 between highways Z and 67 was approved by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission and has been included in the 2022 state Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) to be considered by the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council of Governments, which coordinates road projects in the St. Louis region.
Construction to improve that stretch of I-55 is not expected to begin for at least a couple of years as information is gathered and improvements are designed, according to MoDOT officials.
Those who cannot attend the virtual meetings may, between Jan. 20 and Jan. 27, visit Festus Public Library, 400 W. Main St., Festus, to view informational boards and plans and complete a comment form.
