Joachim Creek bridge flood april 2019

The Joachim Creek Bridge on Commercial Boulevard (Hwy. 61-67) in Herculaneum was closed in May 2019 because of flooding.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is holding a virtual public meeting to provide information about plans to replace the bridge on Hwy. 61/67 (Commercial Boulevard) over Joachim Creek in Herculaneum. MoDOT also is seeking feedback about the project, which will cost an estimated $8.4 million, according to the agency’s website.

Those who want to participate in the meeting, which began Thursday (Aug. 27) and runs through 4 p.m. Friday (Sept. 11), may access it at modot.org/route-6167-over-joachim-creek-bridge-project. A comment form and the project exhibit are available on the site, MoDOT reported in a written statement.

The project calls for replacement of the aging bridge, which was built in 1933. Plans for the new bridge call for it to be built to the west of the existing one. It will be wider to accommodate the Mississippi River Trail, and the elevation will be raised to reduce the frequency of roadway closures due to flooding, according to the statement.

The MoDOT website indicates construction will begin in spring 2022, with completion targeted for spring 2023.

In 2019, the state put the old bridge up for auction, but no one bid to buy it before the June 30, 2019, deadline.
