In the course of spring cleaning, maybe you’ve run across denim and flannel clothing and bedding you no longer need.

Don’t toss those! Instead, send them to the Jefferson County Denim Quilt organization, which is seeking donations of both denim and flannel fabric.

The group uses the fabric to make comfy quilts to donate to those in need.

“We figure everybody is going to be doing a lot of spring cleaning, especially since everyone has to stay at home. So we are hoping people will go through their closets and craft supplies and see what they have,” said Carolyn Bopp of Festus, who heads the group.

Bopp and her cadre of 10-12 volunteers make twin- and crib-sized quilts, which are donated to organizations around the county.

“We took 600 quilts to the Jefferson County Foster Children’s Fund Christmas party,” Bopp said. “We gave about 100 to the Salvation Army to give to the homeless, gave some baby ones to Birthright. We like to give them to families who had a fire.

“I’d like to take some to local shelters for domestic violence, once we’re not on lockdown.”

Bopp said the group can use almost any kind of denim or flannel items to make the quilts.

“We take any jeans, any size, any condition,” Bopp said. “We take any flannel fabric, whether it’s shirts or sheets. We usually get a lot at yard sales, but there aren’t any right now.”

Bopp said the group could use more volunteers, too.

“They can take jeans apart, cut pieces, pin, tie, do hems – they do as much or as little as they want. We could also use gift certificates for stores like JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Walmart.”
