If you’re looking to add some trees to your yard, you may get one for free this Saturday, April 23, in House Springs.

A total of 3,000 seedlings will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Price Chopper parking lot, 4639 Gravois Road, in House Springs.

The trees are free, thanks to the House Springs Lions Club and American Legion Post 783, which partnered to buy the seedlings from the Missouri Department of Conservation for a total of $1,500, said retired forester Wally Brumfield, 75, of Cedar Hill.

“This is community outreach,” he said. “Trees are such an important part of our environment.”

Brumfield said the groups will be giving away bald cypress, loblolly pine and Norway spruce seedlings.

Since Earth Day is on April 22, he said it’s a great time to plant some new trees.

“My motivation is to get people interested in trees,” he said. “ These trees will provide not only beauty for the yard, but a little bit of cover for wildlife and will produce oxygen and help take the carbon out of the air. There's a lot of benefits to a tree, too many to try to list.”

Brumfield said bald cypress trees will do well in wet areas and the loblolly pine trees may be planted anywhere. Norway spruce make good ornamental trees.
