election ahead

Early filings for the Aug. 2 primary election drew many Republicans candidates but no Democratic ones for open seats in Jefferson County.

Some Democratic candidates have filed for statewide races since the filing period opened Tuesday (Feb. 22), but Republican candidates far outpaced Democrats in those races as well, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft reported.

“A total of 337 candidates visited the Secretary of State’s Office (Tuesday) to ensure their names will appear on the Aug. 2 primary ballot,” Ashcroft said in a written statement.

Of those 337 candidates, 236 filed as Republicans, 95 as Democrat and six as Libertarian, Ashcroft said.

Just in the U.S. Senate primary election alone, 18 candidates had filed for the Republican nomination and eight for the Democratic nomination.

District 22 State Sen. Paul Wieland of Imperial can’t run for re-election to that office because of term limits, so he is seeking the Republican nomination for Jefferson County Collector, and four people who have held elected offices in the county or state have filed for the Republican nomination for his senate seat.

Filings for the primary will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 29.

Candidates in the primary will vie for their political party’s nomination in whatever office they’re seeking. Then winners from each party’s primary elections will face off in the Nov. 8 general election.

However, the races for county committeeman and committeewoman seats are separated by party, so the Aug. 2 election decides the winner of those races.

Candidates for county offices file at the Jefferson County Administration Center, 729 Maple St., in Hillsboro, while candidates for state offices file in Jefferson City.

Below is a list of candidates who had filed as of today (Feb. 24). Incumbents – those who are seeking re-election to the office they filed for – are marked with an (I).

Note that not all races are included in the following list. Instead, only those for which candidates had filed as of today are listed.

In addition, redistricting currently is underway in the state Legislature, and the results of that political process could affect certain races, so what is shown below is how the Aug. 2 primary election looks at the moment.
