election ahead

After the first week or so of candidate filings for the April 7 election, voters in three area cities and several school districts will see races on their ballots.

The city of Festus drew 11 candidates for four open seats, and the city of Arnold has races for the Ward 2 and Ward 4 council seats and for a one-year term in Ward 3. De Soto city voters will also see a race for council seats in April.

In addition, the De Soto, Grandview R-2, Northwest R-1, Sunrise R-9 and Windsor C-1 school districts will have races for seats on their boards of education.

The filing period opened Dec. 9 and closes Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The last day for governmental entities to place tax increase requests and other measures on the ballot is Jan. 27. The last day to register to vote in the election is March 11.

Typically, candidates file for open seats during regular business hours at the offices that serve the various governmental entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Ken Waller Memorial Building, formerly the Jefferson County Administration Center, in Hillsboro.

Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures, especially at school districts, which close for winter breaks. School districts will be required to be open for at least part of the day on Dec. 30, the last day of filings, so those wishing to file for seats on boards of education are advised to check their hours.

Attempts were made to contact every entity that will have an April election. If an entity did not respond or failed to provide the requested information, it is noted below.

Those who were elected to seats that are up for election in April and have filed to run for re-election are denoted with an (I) for incumbent. Those who were appointed to fill an open seat since the last time it was on a ballot are not given the incumbent designation.
