Pot of boiling water

A boil water order went into effect this morning (May 26) for Pevely Water Department customers south of Hwy. Z. The order is expected to remain in effect until May 30.

The Water Department advises customers to boil any water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or any activity in which it may be ingested. Anyone who has lost water pressure in the last 24 hours is advised to boil their water.

“We had a major water line break they’re working on,” said Maggie Doenges of the Water Department. “The water main break is right in front of City Hall on Main Street. Some people are without water or have low water pressure.”

She said the boil water order can’t be lifted until Tuesday because that’s the earliest the water may be properly tested.

“They should get it (the water main) fixed soon, but we won’t be able to get it (the water) tested by the Health Department until (May 30),” Doenges said. “And, if people see hydrants running, that’s normal. We do that to relieve pressure from the leak.”

The department also advises customers to run the water to release air in the lines.
