2020 Backstoppers BBQ

Organizer Chuck Gerding said more than 3,000 people attended the 2020 event.

The BackStoppers Bar-B-Que will return for a sixth year on Saturday.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. at the Big River VFW, 1 Lynn Lane, in Cedar Hill.

Chuck Gerding, who organizes the event, said St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird will make an appearance from 3-4 p.m. while Sweetmeat, the mascot for KSHE Radio, will mingle from 1-3 p.m.

“All we ask is to come out and support it for that one day and all that money goes to the BackStoppers,” he said.

BackStoppers provides support to families of first responders who are severely injured or die in the line of duty.

Gerding said last year’s event raised around $52,000.

“We are hoping to beat that this year,” he said. “We want to just keep giving back.”

He said money at the event was raised from food sales and a raffle.

All the food will be cooked on the Screaming Eagle Grill, which Gerding owns.

He also owns Gerding Enterprises, the main sponsor of the event.

Offerings will include smoked ribs, pork steaks, brats and hot dogs, while the VFW will sell soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

The first prize in the raffle will be a Honda Pioneer 1000 UTV, the second prize a $1,000 gift card, and the third prize a large-screen TV.

Gerding said only 500 tickets for the raffle are left and will be sold only that day.

The day will end with a fireworks show after dark by J&M Displays.

Live music will be provided by local bands Rocky and the Wranglers, Killer Whales, Rock Creek Band and Ragz and Friends.

A bounce house for children will be open.
