An estimated 1,000 people attended the Oktoberfest held Sept. 9-11 at Donau Park in House Springs, said Joe Wendl, a member of the German Cultural Society of St. Louis, which sponsored the event.
He attributed good weather to the large turnout at the event, one of the best in the festival’s history.
“It was a hugely successful event,” Wendl said. “I would say it was one of our most successful.”
Those who visited the festival got to listen to music performed by the Die Spitzbaum Band, the Wendl Band and the Deutschmeister Brass Band. They also got to watch the Kindertanzgruppe, Jugendgruppe and Volkstanzgruppe dance troupes perform.
“People enjoyed the dancing from the dance troupes and the music from the bands,” Wendl said. “Everyone enjoyed the beer and the food.”
In addition to the performers who wore traditional German clothing, a number of attendees also donned German garb, he said.
“You saw people wearing traditional dirndls and lederhosen,” Wendl said.
The society’s Oktoberfest goes back a couple of decades, he said.
“We look forward to doing it again next year,” Wendl said. “It will be held at the same time of year.”
He encourages people to keep an eye on the organization’s website at germanstl.org for other German Cultural Society events.
