A man on foot was struck and killed by a train in Horine on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 8), authorities said.

The victims was identified as John Bowling, 24, of Pevely, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office reported today (Nov. 9).

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) spokesman Andy Williams said the man was struck by a train at 4:18 p.m. where Market Street and Cherry Lane meet in the unincorporated Horine community west of Pevely.

“A guy was walking north between the rails. There was an empty coal train headed north. They saw the man and sounded the horn,” Williams said.

Williams said the train, which needs more than a mile to stop, could not stop before striking the victim.

The man was dead when emergency personnel arrived, said Assistant Chief Brad Williams of the Dunklin Fire Protection District.

Brad Williams said the road was closed at the railroad tracks until about 9 p.m. Sunday.

The BNSF Railroad Police are investigating the incident, the Sheriff's Office reported.
