A Hillsboro man died early Aug. 8, less than an hour after he was taken to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City by an ambulance that while on its way there, was involved in a minor accident on Hwy. Y west of Wilson Place northwest of De Soto, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 1:51 a.m., Ryan M. Laux, 39, of Arnold was driving the 2017 Ram 5500 ambulance east on the highway and ran off the right side and the right tires struck a culvert before the truck returned to the road, crossed the center line and was driven to a controlled stop, the report said.
No injuries were reported for Laux.
The Hillsboro man who had suffered a medical condition and was being transported to the hospital – Donald F. Dischbein, 83 – was taken by Valle Ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:36 a.m., according to the report.
Cody W. Harrison, 25, of Hillsboro – a first responder who was tending to the patient who was receiving CPR in the ambulance – had minor injuries and was taken by Valle Ambulance to Mercy Jefferson, the report said.
Laux was wearing a seat belt, but Dischbein and Harrison were exempt from using a safety device, according to the report.
The ambulance was not damaged, the report said.
