Hillsboro Police Officer Brad Maasseen was killed Saturday in an ATV accident.

Hillsboro Police Officer Brad Maassen, 40, was killed Saturday evening (March 28) in an ATV accident on Woodland Drive west of Aspen Drive in Washington County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

A 10-year-old girl, who was a passenger on the vehicle, was seriously hurt, the report said.

Maassen, who lived in Labadie, was a Fox High School graduate.

Hillsboro Police Chief Steve Meinberg said Maassen, who had been with the department for two years, was an exceptional police officer and will be greatly missed.

“He was a great employee. He always had a smile on his face, and everybody in town loved him,” Meinberg said. “He received a whole bunch of awards just in the last few months.”

Maassen was honored at the Jefferson County Crisis Intervention Team banquet and won the Hillsboro Police Department’s Life-Saving Award, the Police Department said Sunday in a post on its Facebook page.

“If there was anything I needed done, he was my go-to guy; he’d be all over it,” Meinberg said. “He enjoyed his job more than anyone else I know. He was all in. This was his dream job and you could tell. It wasn’t a job for him. He looked at it as a privilege to do this job. He loved it so much.

“Any call he could help somebody with, he was always there. He truly recognized what this job was about, being a public servant, and he relished it.”

Meinberg said the Police Department has 10 officers, and all of them respected Maassen.

“He was a great asset, a very important officer and a great friend to all. He will be hard to replace, not only as a fellow officer but as a good human being.”

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Maassen was riding a 2019 Can Am Outlander east on Woodland Drive and ran off the right side of the road, where the ATV struck a tree and overturned, ejecting him and the young passenger, according to the report.

Maassen was pronounced dead at the scene, and the girl was taken by helicopter to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, the report said.

The girl was using a safety device, but Maassen was not, the patrol reported.

The ATV was totaled, the report said.
