A 27-year-old Festus man died Tuesday (Jan. 1) after a two-vehicle crash at 9:26 a.m. on Mapaville-Hematite Road near Hematite, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
Andrew J. Lucas was pronounced dead at 9:46 a.m. by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance personnel, the report said.
Lucas was driving a 2002 Honda Accord south on Mapaville-Hematite Road, north of Hwy. P, when his vehicle crossed the center line and was struck on the left side by a 2008 Honda Odyssey driven by Douglas M. Smelser, 48, of Hillsboro. Both vehicles traveled off the right side of the road, the report said.
Smelser was taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South with moderate injuries, according to the report.
Lucas was not wearing a seat belt, and Smelser was wearing a seat belt, the report said.
The Accord was totaled, and the Odyssey sustained extensive damage, the report said.
