A De Soto woman was killed and a Pacific man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following a two-vehicle traffic accident Saturday afternoon (May 23) on Hwy. 47 in the Richwoods area of Washington County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the 24-year-old Pacific man was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer south on Hwy. 47 north of Carp Lake Road at 1:41 p.m. when he lost control and his vehicle hit a 2002 Mercedes-Benz ML320 driven by Barbara Shaffer, 75, of De Soto. The impact caused the Trailblazer to overturn and hit a fence. The Mercedes-Benz went off the right side of the road and hit a fence.
Shaffer was pronounced dead at 3:42 p.m. at Washington County Memorial Hospital in Potosi, the report said.
The man was arrested by patrol officers on suspicion of driving while intoxicated resulting in the death of another person, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. The report said the man had 10 grams of marijuana.
The man, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was taken by Washington County Ambulance to Washington County Memorial Hospital, the report said. He later was taken to the Washington County Jail in Potosi, the report said.
He will not be named unless charges are filed by the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Shaffer was wearing a seat belt but the driver of the Trailblazer was not, the report said. Both vehicles were totaled.
