Malinda S. Lyman, 53, of Catawissa died Tuesday night (Aug. 21) when she was standing near a pickup stopped at mile marker 252.2 along I-44 near Gray Summit and was struck by a tractor-trailer. The pickup, a 1994 Ford F-250, had no lights on and was partially blocking the right lane, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 11:35 p.m., Hubert E. Newton, 66, of Bardwell, Ky., was driving a 2017 Volvo tractor-trailer west in the right lane and when it approached the pickup, he swerved in an attempt to avoid it, but the big rig struck the pickup and Lyman. Then, the tractor-trailer overturned before being struck by another big rig, a 2018 Freightliner driven by Robert J. Mulcahey, 26, of Los Angeles, the report said.
Newton suffered minor injuries and was transported by Meramec Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Washington, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
No injuries were reported for Mulcahey.
Lyman was pronounced dead at the scene, at 11:54 p.m., by Meramec Ambulance personnel, the report said.
Newton and Mulcahey were both wearing seat belts, the patrol reported.
The F-250 was totaled, and both tractor-trailers were extensively damaged, the report said.
