Two Barnhart residents were injured June 26 in a two-vehicle accident on Hwy. A just east of its west junction with Frontier Road near Mapaville, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

At 1:30 p.m., Abigail A. Lambert, 24, of Bonne Terre was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic west on the highway and struck a deer that ran in front of the car, and then the deer was thrown into the path of an eastbound 2019 Ford Escape driven by Richard Pirkle, 84, of Barnhart. The Escape struck the deer, and then Pirkle lost control of the SUV, which struck an embankment, the report said.

No injuries were reported for Lambert. However, Pirkle had minor injuries, and a passenger in the Escape – Mary E. Pirkle, 81, of Barnhart – was moderately injured, and both were taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, according to the report.

Mary Pirkle was listed in serious condition this afternoon (June 29), but the hospital had no information about Richard Pirkle, a Mercy spokesman said.

All those involved in the accident were wearing seat belts, the patrol reported.

The two vehicles were extensively damaged, the report said.
