A Festus woman was arrested following a traffic accident Saturday evening (Dec. 17) on I-270 north of Hwy. 30 in Sunset Hills in St. Louis County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the 25-year-old woman was driving a 2015 Kia Optima south on I-270 at 6:25 p.m. when she ran into the back of a 2000 Dodge Caravan driven by Eugene Werkmeister, 56, of Arnold.

Both drivers sustained moderate injuries and both were taken to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County, Werkmeister by the Fenton Fire Protection District and the Festus woman by Gateway Ambulance.

Werkmeister was listed in stable condition on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 18), a hospital spokesman said, while the woman had been treated and released.

While she was at the hospital, patrol officers arrested her on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, second-degree assault and possession of under 35 grams of marijuana.

She will not be named unless she is charged with a crime by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The woman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident but Werkmeister was, the report said. Both vehicles were totaled.
