Pam Schmidt of Festus has many fond memories of the Sacred Heart School building in Festus, which closed at the end of the 2005-2006 school year. “It's almost a hundred years old—a full brick building, copper guttering, wood floors and baseboards, original windows, with very large classrooms,” Pam said. “I had the privilege to teach there for ten years: seven in second grade and three in fourth. I met wonderful students, parents, faculty, staff and parishioners, and I still have contact and relationships with many of them.” Pam recalled the support she received when she got the news that her mother was dying. “Marge Schumer, my principal, immediately heard the news and acted quickly to find a substitute and take care of my class. By the time my brother came to pick me up (at Sacred Heart), I knew I didn't have to worry. My substitute, Ardelle Wallman, showed immense compassion and kindness that day.” Pam also remembered how invested other faculty members were when she met her future husband. “As we kept dating and eventually became engaged, they threw a surprise bridal shower for me. They brought a beautiful white cake, presents, balloons and streamers (to) the school cafeteria.”
