A total of seven flu-related deaths and seven COVID-related deaths were reported to the Jefferson County Health Department during the respiratory season that began Sept. 28 and ended May 16.

During the respiratory season, 4,088 flu cases were reported to the Health Department. Of those, 2,482 cases (about 61 percent) were type A, 1,605 (about 39 percent) were type B and one was unknown. The flu season peaked at 577 cases during the week of Dec. 21, and no cases were reported during the final week of the season.

Also, during the season, 2,240 COVID cases were reported to the Health Department, with cases peaking at 228 during the week of March 1. During the final week of the season, six cases were reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 months and older get an annual influenza (flu) vaccine, especially those at higher risk. The CDC recommends an updated COVID vaccine for most adults.
