Those who hung out around the boat dock at Herculaneum City Park near the bridge over Joachim Creek over the past several months could regularly find two geese and a small duck there, at least since last summer when they first showed up, said Nadine Garland, who lives in Herculaneum and occasionally stopped by to feed them.

She said the two geese appeared to watch over the little duck.

Recently the duck disappeared, but the two geese stuck around for a while longer.

Unfortunately, Garland said, she noticed on Feb. 16 that one of the geese had died.

For at least two days, she said, the other goose seemed to guard the dead body.

Garland said she was worried the remaining goose wasn’t eating, so she showed up Feb. 17 to feed it, and he was very defensive, making sure she didn’t get too close.

Also, the goose appeared to push some of the food at the dead body, Garland said.

By Feb. 18, both the dead goose’s body and the surviving goose were gone, Garland said.
