Peeps, a zebra finch, is 8 1/2 years old. Its owner was told zebra finches live about 4 1/2 years.

Peeps, a zebra finch, continues to share his song with the world in a strong voice despite getting up in years. He is shown in a photo taken June 15, 2016.

“He’s a funny bird,” said owner Eric Shannon of Eureka. “When he sings, he’s very emphatic.”

Shannon said Peeps is 8 1/2 years old, an advanced age for a zebra finch.

“When we bought him, we were told they live about 4 1/2 years,” he said.

Peeps is clean and intelligent.

“He likes taking baths and he knows how to communicate that he wants his bath,” Shannon said. “We keep the bath under his cage. He’ll keep looking down at it.”

Shannon said his family enjoys having zebra finches as pets and although they sing, they do not create a ruckus.

“We’ve had three other zebra finches,” he said. “They’re very easy to take care of and they don’t make much noise.”
