Cruiser, a golden retriever about 6 or 7 years old, is shown on a paddleboard in a picture taken in the spring at the Gulf of Mexico in Gulf Shores, Ala., said owner Jim Riegerix of Arnold. He said he obtained Cruiser from Dirk’s Fund, a golden retriever and large dog rescue organization in Pacific.
“He wouldn’t get in the ocean because the waves were a little rough, so I decided to see if he would get on my stand-up paddleboard and let me push him around in the bay where the water was calm,” Riegerix said. “Not only did he let me, he didn’t want to get off of it.”
Riegerix said Cruiser usually does not mind swimming.
“He normally likes the water,” he said. “It was just very rough water.”
He said Cruiser is good-natured.
“He’s a golden retriever,” he said. “They seek praise. They’re affectionate. They’re probably the best friends I’ve ever had. He’s my third golden retriever.”
