Festus Mayor Mike Cage said he and his wife, Linda, went a long way to obtain their dog, Maggie, shown here in a photo taken March 27 at Festus City Hall.

“She’s a miniature golden doodle – half golden retriever, half poodle,” Cage said. “She’s from Pennsylvania. I was retiring (as a paramedic) and I didn’t particularly want a dog, but my wife did. My niece has a friend online whose dog had puppies and had them for sale. My wife showed me the pictures. Me, being the loyal husband, said we’d go to St. Charles to look at the puppies. But, we found out the friend had moved to Philadelphia.”

Fortunately for all involved, the Cages already had a trip planned to the East Coast.

“We were going to a wedding in Washington, D.C.,” he said. “My wife spoke to the woman, who said she lived about three hours from Washington. Long story short, we left without a dog and came back with a dog.”

He said Maggie, 3, quickly became a part of the family.

“She’s great,” he said. “She can’t get enough petting. She’s the smartest dog we’ve ever had.”
