Looking back

Windsor School District campuses are beehives of activity as construction workers are finishing up some projects in time for the first day of school this year and making progress on others that won’t be done until next year.

Construction is nearly complete at the Windsor High School athletic stadium, where new locker rooms and restrooms are being built, Superintendent Rudy Duran said.

The locker rooms and restrooms are in the lower level of the building, and an alternative school will be housed upstairs, he said.

In addition, a new coaches/press box is under construction. The concession stand is being remodeled, too.

Construction is expected to be complete before the start of school on Aug. 16, Duran said.

That project will cost an estimated $1.5 million, he said. Other projects are under way throughout the district.

Kimmswick campus

An approximately $6 million addition is being built at the Kimmswick campus, where the kindergarten center is being converted into a primary school.

“The bottom floor has been poured; the walls are going up,” Duran said. “There’s been quite a bit of progress over there.”

That project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2008.

When it is finished, the primary school will include 16 classrooms, a library, cafeteria and gymnasium.

The Kimmswick property formerly had been the old St. Joseph Catholic parish, which has been relocated to Imperial. The old church had been used by the school district but was demolished to make way for the expansion.

Windsor Elementary addition

An approximately $3.7 million addition is under construction at Windsor Elementary School. That addition will include eight classrooms, a multipurpose room, computer labs, offices for administrators and counselors and a teachers’ workroom and a library. It is scheduled to be finished in July 2008, Duran said.

A double-wide mobile unit has been placed near Windsor Elementary to serve as a temporary library for the Windsor Intermediate Center until the addition is completed. The district will pay $1,100 a month to lease the mobile unit.

The Intermediate Center library had been housed in a metal building outside the elementary school that has since been donated to the Windsor Boy Scouts. Another larger metal building also has been removed.

School officials had planned to reassemble it at the old Suburban Auto Auctions property, and use it for storage, but it will be cheaper to have a new wood building constructed, assistant superintendent Bob Borman said.

The Board of Education agreed July 18 to spend $40,000 for a 40-by-90-foot building to be erected on that property.

Previously, the board had approved a $32,000 expenditure for the old metal building, which was 40-by-60 feet, to be moved and reassembled.

Once the elementary school addition is complete, both the elementary school and intermediate center will use the new library.

Freer Elementary

Some improvements at Freer Elementary School are underway, including additional parking and a new stage that is being built in the Freer Elementary School gymnasium.

“The concrete’s been poured (at least the gym),” Duran said.

That project is expected to cost about $200,000 and be complete shortly after the start of school, he said.

All the improvements are being funded with revenue from a $16.5 million bond issue voters approved in April 2006, Duran said.

Borman told the Board of Education July 18 that the projects are on schedule.
