The Hyway Rockers Car Club recently donated $1,740 to the family of Blake Bahr, a 2-year-old who had a life-saving kidney transplant in January.
Members of the car club showed up at the Bahrs’ Arnold home on Dec. 3 to present the donation to the family and show off some of their classic cars.
“We had 17 cars there,” said car club president Dennis Gowen.
He said the Bahrs and their neighbors filled the cul-de-sac near the Bahrs' home to look at the cars the club members brought.
Gowen said the donation was from funds the club made through raffles and sponsorships at their regular car cruises held throughout the year.
“We do this every year,” he said. “We take the money we have left over and donate it to a family in need.”
Blake is the son of Heather and Nick Bahr, and Heather said the family will use the money to help pay for Blake’s medical costs.
“We were moved to tears and beyond touched by what they’ve done,” Heather said.
She said Blake “loved” seeing all the cars.
“Blake has been having some blood pressure issues this week, so we were especially grateful to have them come to our house and do something so special.”
The car club is based in Festus and was established about 20 years ago, Gowen said.
He said about 65 families take part in the club’s activities. The club, a nonprofit group that’s open to new members, has car cruises the second Saturday of each month from April through October at the Burger King on Hwy. Z in Pevely.
