Mackenzie Roney, 17, a junior at Herculaneum High School, leads the school’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is president of the National Honor Society, is secretary of the junior class, plays right field on the school softball team and point guard on the basketball team, and is a pole vaulter and hurdler on the school track team.
She also plays the role of Gingy in the Herculaneum spring musical “Shrek.”
In addition to all those activities, she is the student member of the Dunklin R-5 Board of Education.
How does a student gain a spot on the school board?
It turns out there’s an app for that. Roney got an application from a school counselor, filled it out and won the position.
“I try to be as involved as possible,” she said. “This is a great way to represent fellow students and represent the school.”
Roney, a non-voting member of the school board, said she’s been impressed with how well organized it is.
“And I’m impressed at how they look out for the best interests of students with every decision.
Roney noted that student interests were in the forefront when the board recently made decisions about a new air conditioning system and the purchase of new school buses.
So, once a month, Roney takes her seat at the table in school board sessions and takes in everything the board discusses.

She is the daughter of Marilyn and Toney Roney, of Herculaneum.
