The Jefferson County Family YMCA in Festus has re-launched its Leaders Club for students in grades six through 12. The club offers members a safe environment to acquire beneficial skills.
To qualify, members must be between 12 and 17 years old. Also, club members are required to complete seven hours of community service a month and maintain a 2.5 grade-point average.
A kick-off meeting and lock-in will be held from 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, to 6 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at the YMCA, 1303 YMCA Drive. It will include swimming, pizza, a scavenger hunt and more.
After, that, club members meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Aug. 13.
At meetings, a YMCA staff member will lead discussions on topics like community service and fundraising; goal setting; financial management; college and scholarships; communication skills; dating and relationships; drug and alcohol awareness; health, fitness and nutrition; social issues; local community events and news; networking and public speaking; résumé development; job skills and interview tips.
The YMCA coordinates additional activities for the group, including rallies, trips to the YMCA Trout Lodge and the annual Leaders School.
Membership in the club promotes team work and teaches students responsibility, leadership, respect for others and the value of friendship.
Club dues are $25 for thee months for YMCA members and $30 for non-members.
Sessions will be held year round.
