Eureka Police patch

Eureka Police are trying to identify a man suspected of using a 71-year-old Eureka woman’s credit card to buy two iPads at Walmart, 131 Eureka Towne Center Drive. Investigators believe the man stole the woman’s wallet while she was at the St. Louis Bread Co. restaurant, 201 E. Fifth St., in Eureka, police reported.

The woman called police at about 2:35 p.m. Jan. 22 after she was alerted that a charge for $1,676.16 was made on one of her cards at Walmart. She told police that she lost her wallet at about noon that day after she paid for her meal at St. Louis Bread Co., the report said.

The wallet was worth about $50, and it had three credit cards, $42 in cash and the woman’s driver’s license inside it, according to the report.

A man was allegedly seen at about 1:10 p.m. Jan. 22 in surveillance video at Walmart using one of the woman’s credit cards to buy the iPads, the report said.

He also tried to purchase several gift cards at a self-checkout register, but he was directed to buy the gift cards at the customer service counter. The man did not buy the gift cards and left the store, according to the report.

The woman’s wallet was found on a post in the Walmart parking lot. The wallet was returned to the woman, who said her driver’s license and a gift card to St. Louis Bread Co. were the only items still in the wallet, the report said.

As of Feb. 6, the man in the surveillance video had not been identified, and no arrests had been made, Lt. Brett Grittini said. He asks anyone with information about the theft of the wallet or the credit card that was used at Walmart to call the Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
