Eureka High School temporarily suspended its football strength and conditioning camp after a student who was participating in it tested positive for COVID-19, according to a July 14 email from Eureka High Principal Corey Sink.
In addition, a person who took part in a Eureka High cheerleading tryout held at LaSalle Springs Middle School in Wildwood tested positive for the virus.
Both schools are part of the Rockwood School District.
“Our student (who was at the football camp) was on campus (during the week of July 6-10) and (July 13) morning,” Sink said. “As soon as his parents became aware of a positive test result (on July 13), Eureka High officials were notified, and the student and anyone with “close contact” were sent home.”
According to the email, parents of students were informed by phone and other athletes and staff were notified by email.
The facility was deep cleaned, the email said.
On July 17, Sink sent an email letting school families know about the person who tested positive for the virus after taking part in the cheerleading tryout on July 9.
That person was asymptomatic on July 9 and for at least 48 hours after that, Sink said.
He said the person was “tested due to a potential exposure outside of Rockwood.”
Sink said he could not identify the people who tested positive because of privacy issues.
“The safety and health of students and staff continue to be our highest priorities,” Sink added.
School officials said anyone who may have been exposed to the virus or who was tested for the virus should remain away from the schools until they receive a negative test result or further instructions from the Department of Health.
Rockwood’s communications coordinator David Morrison said no school sports activities are being held now due to new St. Louis County guidelines in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
