The Spot-Virtual Learning Support, which opened Aug. 31, is a new business intended to help families whose children are not attending classes at school and must learn online, for whatever reason, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
The owner, Taylor Hassell, had been a teacher but last spring decided to leave education and go into business. The Spot essentially provides a space for students to take classes online and provides supervision for students taking classes online in their homes.
“We have created an educational support service that aims to assist students in their virtual learning experience,” Hassell said. “We know families are in a panic about what to do with their students when they aren't able to come into school, and we are here to help.
“We’ve got qualified adults who have a history in education who will be working with the students. We’re targeting families with school kids from kindergarten on up, any age, really. We’re targeting families where the parents either have to go to work or have to work from home productively. It’s for students of all abilities, though not special needs students.”
The Spot employees will offer their services to groups of students in homes, called “pod learning,” or at space the business is renting at the Hillsboro Knights of Columbus building, 9330 Old Hwy.
In pod learning, a teacher from The Spot goes to a participating home to assist a minimum of five students and a maximum of 10 students. Parents and the pod teachers decide on the schedule. The cost is $45 per day per student.
Those who participate at the Hillsboro Knights of Columbus building are provided personal work spaces and have access to learning assistants during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $25 per day per student.
Hassell, 25, of Fenton said the support offered by The Spot can include some tutoring, but is more focused on enhancing students’ online learning experiences.
“We’re not a school,” he said. “Say there’s a Zoom class through their school district. We’ll help them participate in their public school classes. We’ll help them in math, English, whatever they need.”
