After losing its season-opening match at Valle on Aug. 29, St. Pius has reeled off seven straight victories, including a straight-set triumph (25-16, 25-19) at Lutheran South on Thursday (Sept. 6). In this battle of schools nicknamed the Lancers, St. Pius pulled away in the first set after a 7-7 tie and held off a brief Lutheran South challenge in the second set, with Pius hitters Amie Held and Grace Richmeyer planting timely kills. St. Pius was coming off a championship run at the Notre Dame Volleyball fest in Cape Girardeau over the Labor Day weekend. Lutheran South, a final four team in Class 3 a year ago, proved to be no match for St. Pius, the defending Class 2 state champion.
