Accompanied story, “How Sweet It Is,” published 12-15-2011

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1 stick butter

1 package chopped dates (8-ounce package)

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg, beaten

3 cups Rice Krispies

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1-2 cups sweetened coconut flakes

Melt butter in large skillet over low heat. Add brown sugar and dates.

Remove skillet from heat and stir in the egg.

Return to low heat and stir constantly for about 5 minutes so the sugar dissolves.

Remove skillet from heat. Add vanilla, Rice Krispies and nuts and mix well with a spoon.

Place some of the coconut flakes in a bowl.

Roll cereal mixture in small balls and then roll in the coconuts.

Add coconut to bowl as needed.

Makes about 4 dozen small ball cookies. Store in airtight container.
