GOOD NEWS: De Soto waterfall begins to flow

Kevin Warden, De Soto director of public works, and the city’s public works crew have spent the past three years completing a waterfall in De Soto’s Spross Park. It officially opened April 23.

Already, a wedding has been scheduled at the picturesque location, Warden said.

In the 1970s, Warden said, the city had a small wading pool in the park and water from the pool flowed down the hillside.

The new waterfall basically follows the path of that trickle. Warden said local people donated large boulders to add to the natural stone on the hillside. A basin and pump system were installed.

Warden said the area has been landscaped with shrubbery, roses and Japanese maple trees.

The project cost $4,000. Funds for the waterfall have been budgeted over the past three years.

The waterfall is one of several improvements to the 15-acre park, on Concord Drive at Amvets Drive near De Soto High School. Last year, the city installed a disc golf course and dedicated a “Fallen Soldier” memorial.
