More stuff: High Ridge thrift store owner determined to ride it out
Al Eckert, who opened More Stuff by Al’s Estate Sales in early August, said it took some guts to open a small business during a global pandemic.
“It’s all because of anticipation that this pandemic is not going to last,” he said. “We’re going to be known and we’re going to make a name for ourselves and we’re going to really be busy, but we have to survive the pandemic, even though we opened up right in the middle of it.”
Customers who visit the 4,000-square-foot thrift store at 1606 Gravois Road in High Ridge will find collectibles, tools, kitchenware and other interesting items.
He said his inventory includes Tupperware, Pyrex, yard tools, handheld tools, small furniture, vintage albums, die-cast cars, Hot Wheels and pocketknives.
Eckert said stock changes daily so there is always a reason to stop in and browse.
He said he originally looked for a store in St. Louis County, but cast his eyes south.
“Jefferson County has welcomed us with open arms,” he said. “The neighboring businesses out here have been very supportive.”
Eckert has been in the estate sale business for 12 years and decided to open a physical store to sell items left over from estate sales or items acquired from estates.
“People have been telling me to open up for years,” he said.
Eckert said he was storing items for as long as 18 months in anticipation of opening the store.
The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
